Embroidery.

Embroidery is a technique that has a memory of its own. This is a form of art that has been done for centuries in different parts of the world and holds with in it a common thread as well as the difference of each culture. The needle and thread are one of the most important inventions in the history of man. This is an art form with history in which the basic techniques or stitches on surviving examples of the earliest embroidery remain the fundamental techniques of hand embroidery today. In an ever changing world, this is a craft that is still done as it was done in the past and holds within it a big part of the history of man.

My grandmother’s favorite story was the one about the special package from the rich uncle overseas. The brand new Singer sewing machine she got that was the pride of the neighborhood. This sewing machine was always my favorite place in her house and still brings back memories of her working on it and then teaching me how to use it. The threads of this embroidery are like the different threads of her life. The eyes that saw wars of great loss, that saw a country being born, that raised children and grandchildren and the wrinkles that tell those stories. This story and this craft is the story of my grandmother and the story of women around the world. The movement and rhythm of my hands embroidering resinate with the movements of the women of my family and with that of centuries of women from around the world. It’s the story of her life, the story of mine, and the story of women.
